Even SMALL Amounts of Water Can Cause BIG Problems!

Drying mats and a fan being used to remove moisture from the wood flooring after a water loss

It doesn’t take a lot of water to cause significant damage to your home. Just an inch or more can destroy carpets, floors, dry wall, and warp wood floors. Furniture and other contents can also be damaged if not removed and dried in a timely manner.

Common causes of water damage:

  • Water heater failures
  • Leaky roofs
  • Broken pipes
  • Washing machine over flow
  • Dishwasher leaks
  • Over flow of bathtub/sinks
  • Toilet/sewage backup
  • Ice maker leak
  • Ground water seeping into the basement (especially due to melting snow)
  • Heavy rain fall
  • Natural disasters
  • Sump pump failures

Here in Vermont, we find that a lot of homeowners like to try and take care of disasters themselves before calling for help. The problem with this is that after the mess is cleaned up and the water appears to be gone, moisture can seep into your floor coverings, carpet pads, foundation, sheet rock, wood structures and walls—causing more problems for your home. These areas create the perfect dark and wet environment for mold to grow which will call for expensive mitigation services later down the road.

If you catch the water within a timely manner (preferably within 24 hours), you can avoid some of the damage which ultimately means saving money and time in the future. It’s important that water is removed as soon as possible and properly dried by SERVPRO of Burlington/Middlebury’s certified technicians and our equipment. After drying, we ventilate and disinfect to prevent the growth of bacteria, mildew, fungi, and other microorganisms that can be harmful to you and your family.
